Bouzouki has its origins in the pandura of ancient Greece.

This instrument, as we know it today, was introduced to Greece following the war in Asia Minor between 1919 and 1922.

Originally, the bouzouki was equipped with three pairs of strings, also called "choruses", totaling six strings. This version is known as bouzouki trichordo.

Towards the end of the 1950s, the tetrachordo bouzouki, with four pairs of strings and therefore eight strings in total, gained popularity.
